Garrido guides Lady Warriors past Greer, 82-66

Madison Garrido set her career high for points twice last week. She scored 27 against Wade Hampton on Jan. 19 before putting up 29 in a win over Greer on Jan. 23.

Riverside guard Madison Garrido has found another level.

Against Wade Hampton on Jan. 19, Garrido scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Lady Warriors to a 70-68 win over the talented Lady Generals.

How did Garrido follow that career night? In her very next game, she reached a new career mark yet again, pouring in 29 points to lead Riverside to an 82-66 victory over Greer.

It’s all coming together for the junior point guard.

“I just feel like my heart to win has gotten even bigger,” Garrido said. “Each of these region games coming up is huge for us, so I’m trying to do whatever it takes to help us win.”

Garrido had 21 points by halftime against Greer and connected on a season-high six three-point attempts. Riverside led by as many as 24 in the win.

“At the beginning, they weren’t really guarding me around the three-point line,” said Garrido. “So I took advantage. Then, once they started playing me closer from three, I drove down the lane more and made kick-out passes.”

Garrido is finally feeling herself again after obtaining a concussion during one of the Lady Warriors’ holiday tournaments. She’s averaged over 20 points per game throughout five region matchups this season.

The Lady Warriors are unbeaten in those five region games.

“She’s finally finding her momentum again after getting hurt,” said Riverside head coach Brianne Jones.

“For her to be peaking now, this couldn’t be coming at a better time.”

As a team, the Lady Warriors are in the driver’s seat to win 4-A Region 2. They’re 14-7 on the season and 5-0 in region play, aiming for their first region championship since 2010.

“Every single game we play, we try to remind the girls that it’s the most important game of the season,” said Jones.

“One game at a time. We try to keep them focused on that. Our goal is to have our fate in our own hands.

“We’re out to get it this year. We’re tired of being second best.”
