Pfister’s double-double earns GMC third-straight win
Jack Pfister’s 13th double-double of the season (19 points, 14 rebounds) helped Greer Middle College crush Laurens.
Jack Pfister crafted his 13th double-double of the season, putting up 19 points and 14 rebounds as Greer Middle College cruised to a 78-47 victory over Laurens on Saturday.
The Blazers (12-4) never trailed en route to their third-straight win.
“We’re finding success because of how balanced we are this year as a team,” said Pfister after the game. “In past seasons, it was more of a two-man game, but now we’ve got four or five guys every night that can get double-digit points.”
That’s exactly what happened on Saturday. Four Blazers scored in double-figures in GMC’s blowout win.
Pfister had his 19. Musa Muriithi dropped 18 points on six made threes. Braylen Silver had 15 points, and CB Bowser put together his first double-digit performance of the season with 10 points.
The win over Class 4-A Laurens (6-11) added to a new program record — the 2-A Blazers close non-region play with six wins over teams from higher classifications.
“We’ve played a tough non-region schedule,” said GMC head coach Jamar Armstrong. “We could have easily played a bunch of 2-A teams like ourselves, but playing these 3-A, 4-A, and 5-A teams has gotten us ready for region play.”
Pfister’s performance against the Raiders added to his already impressive GMC career. Pfister hit the 1,000-point mark on Dec. 15 in a win over High Point Academy.
He’s closing in on 1,000 rebounds, as well.
Pfister needs 81 more rebounds before seasons’ end to earn the milestone. With a minimum of nine games left and the senior averaging almost 12 boards per game, it’s well within his grasp.
He’d be the first in program history to reach the accomplishment.
“As a freshman, I thought I’d never even get to 1,000 points,” said Pfister.
“Year by year, I just started inching towards it. Now I’m here and I’m getting close to 1,000 rebounds, too. It’s crazy.”
Armstrong noted Pfister’s improvements in both skill and stature over the years.
“He’s gotten bigger and stronger every single year,” said Armstrong. “Six-foot-five and 200 pounds, though, I can’t say I ever thought he’d get this big and strong.”
“Coming in, I was a little bit scrawny,” said Pfister, laughing. “But Coach Armstrong, he loves getting me in the weight room and getting me jacked. It really helps on the court, because these dudes just bounce right off me.”
Pfister is thankful to his younger self for putting in the work. The results, he said, are coming in.
“It’s been a lot of hard work. Some days, I definitely didn’t want to lift in the weight room, but I knew I had to,” said Pfister.
“My freshman year, I’d get boards. Only like four or five per game, though. It was a lot harder to come by, because guys could just push me out of the way.
“Now, I’m the one pushing everyone else out of the way. It’s great.”
