Eastside’s Sullivan using collegiate connections to promote area athletes
Eastside head coach Everick Sullivan is hosting the Upstate Hoops Showcase on March 9th for unsigned seniors and underclassmen.
Everick Sullivan knows what college coaches are looking for.
After all, not long ago, he was one.
The current Eastside and former Lenoir-Rhyne basketball coach is using some of that knowledge — along with some collegiate connections — to promote local basketball talent.
On March 9th, Sullivan will host the Upstate Hoops Showcase at Eastside High School. The event runs from 1-3 p.m. Unsigned seniors and underclassmen are encouraged to attend and showcase their skills in front of college coaches.
Sullivan already has coaches from eight different colleges and universities committed to attend.
“If you look at it the last couple of years, recruiting from the high-school level has been hit pretty hard,” said Sullivan. “It’s declined a little bit. So for me, there was no better way to try and help some of these talented athletes in our area get recruited than to use my connections. That’s how this came about.”
Currently, coaches from the following schools are confirmed to be in attendance:
-Newberry College
-Anderson University
-Columbia College
-South Carolina Central Christian College
-Montreat College
-Caldwell Community College
-Spartanburg Methodist College
-Denmark Tech
Sullivan says he is working to confirm several other schools in attendance, as well.
“If I'm a high school player, and there's an opportunity to play in front of a bunch of college coaches all in one gym, and I want to play in college, I couldn’t turn this down,” said Sullivan. “This may be an opportunity some seniors don’t see again.”
Sullivan said the Showcase is designed to give college coaches as close to a game-like atmosphere as possible. 5-on-5 for the majority of the two hours is the goal, Sullivan says.
The cost of the camp is $100 — a price that includes a commemorative t-shirt for each attendee.
