During Byrnes Lady Rebel lacrosse’s 21-7 win over Boiling Springs on March 12, Sami Workman and Addison Moody were honored for scoring their 100th career goals.
Workman, a junior, and Moody, a senior, both walked across the field with head coach Bill Cureton during the game to celebrate the milestone. Cureton called a timeout after Moody’s 100th goal to announce the achievements.
“It’s crazy. In my freshman season, this is something I never saw happening,” said Moody. “I never thought this would be possible. But as my career kept going, I realized I can do this.”
“Last year, we had two girls [Sophie Pavlick and Aubree Mayse] reach 100,” said Workman. “We’ve grown up with them and most of these girls, so seeing the two of them get it, we kind of realized maybe that could be us one day. And here we are.”
Moody’s 100th-career goal came in the second half against Boiling Springs. Workman’s 100th actually came one week prior at Spartanburg, but Cureton wanted to be sure she got her home crowd standing ovation, too.
“It was a surprise to me that he did that,” said Workman. “I almost wanted to save my 100th for a home game, but I was happy I got to be honored in front of our fans.”
Cureton spoke about Workman and Moody’s impacts on the program throughout their careers.
“Both of them have been incredible for us,” said Cureton. “They’re prolific left-handers for our team. Their speed and ball-handling skills have improved every year. This is a great accomplishment for both of them—100 goals is a big deal at the high school level.”
Moody had five goals and Workman had four in Byrnes’ (4-3) trouncing over Boiling Springs. After a slow start to the season, Cureton said, his team is finally starting to play up to its potential in the chase for a repeat region title.
“We’ve challenged ourselves to be who we can be and play as well as we did in the past,” said Cureton. “We’ve got some incredible players on our team, and I still don’t think we’ve played up to our potential as a team. There’s still a long way for us to go. But tonight was a good move in the right direction.”
